V roce 1710 na objednávku plaského opata Eugena Tyttla (1666 – 1738) vznikl v dílně Jana Blažeje Santiniho (1677 – 1723) nový projekt na přestavbu kláštera Plasy. Základní kámen novostavby konventu byl slavnostně vysvěcen v červenci 1711 a umístěn do jihozápadního rohu dosud virtuální budovy konventu, tam kde měla být kaple svatého Bernarda – patrona řádu Cisterciáků. Na této akci byl Jan Blažej Santini pravděpodobně přítomen a určitě měl nazuté botky. Anály uvádí, že se Santini narodil tělesně postižený a na jednu nohu kulhal. Dokončení monumentální stavby a jeho předání bratřím Cisterciákům proběhlo v roce 1726, tedy po 15 letech. Tehdy uplynuly tři roky od Santiniho smrti a on zhmotnění své odvážné vize budovy, vznášející se v mokřadu na 6000 dubových pilotech, už spatřit nemohl. Album je věnované památce umělce, od jehož smrti loni uplynulo 300 let.

Kdo vstoupil začátkem devadesátých let 20. století do budovy konventu bývalého cisterciáckého kláštera v Plasích, jakoby byl chycen do nějaké smyčky zastaveného času: ta atmosféra mi tehdy připomínala záběry z filmu Nostalgie od Andreje Tarkovského: vlhké ticho, ozvěna kapek a vzdálených kroků se rozléhaly v ambitech, okny pronikal křik poštolek nad rajským dvorem, kde se se soumrakem zjevovala silueta nočního hlídače doprovázená vlčákem. Několikrát spolu se “Snivci“ jsem byl pozván na symposia Hermit, abychom zahráli během zahájení symposia, nebo na festivalech a do Plasů jsem se vracel od roku 1992 skoro každý rok. Moje tehdejší pobyty se někdy protáhly alespoň o týden.
Poprvé po zhroucení „Železné opony“ jsem se v Plasích setkával s umělci z „druhé strany“. Občas jsme se kvůli různým jazykům těžko dorozumívali a já se v duchu ptal, co je vlastně do Plasů přivedlo? Nicméně jsme asi měli přece jen cosi společného a s některými se přátelím a spolupracuji dodnes: třeba s Pierrem Berthetem z Lutychu, nebo s Michealem Deliou z New Yorku.
V roce 1995 měl festival a symposium Hermit název „Křížení poledníků“ a my jsme se po nějakém koncertu s Orlojem snivců domluvili a „prokřížili“ s Michaelem Deliou a s kanadským hudebníkem Allanem Paiviou, které jsme pozvali na společnou improvizaci a nahrávání. Nahrávali jsme v kapli patrona řádu Bernarda z Clairvaux, kde stálo koncertní křídlo a v kapli svatého Benedikta. Používali jsme mimo jiné nástroje přenosné harmonium, které si Miloš tehdy právě dovezl zpátky do Čech z Amsterodamu. Nahrával jsem z akustiky prostoru na DATku a mikrofony Neumann. Na album Santiniho botky jsme do výběru z několika hodin improvizací jako bonus zařadili také krátké sólo na violoncello Vojtěcha Havla a záznam zvuku kinetické instalace Ada van Buurena z CD Meridian Crossings, které vyšlo tehdy jako příloha katalogu.

Santini's Shoes

Commissioned in 1710 by the abbot of Plasy, Eugen Tyttl (1666–1738) a new project for the reconstruction of the Plasy monastery was designed in the workshop of the Baroque architect Jan Blažej Santini (1677–1723). The following year in July 1711, the cornerstone of the building of the new convent was ceremoniously consecrated and placed in the southwest corner of the yet virtual building of the convent, where the chapel – dedicated to the patron of the Cistercian order Bernard of Clairvaux – was to be built. According to historical records, Santini was born physically disabled, limping on one leg, and was most likely present at this event. He almost certainly had his shoes on. The completion of the monumental building and its handover to the Cistercian brothers took place fifteen years later. It was three years after Santini's death, and he could not see the materialization of the vision of a massive building with outstanding acoustics, raised on 6,000 oak piles in a wetland. The album Santini's Shoes is an homage to the architect, who died 301 years ago.

Whoever entered the convent building of the former Plasy Cistercian monastery in the early 1990s felt as if he had entered a loop of frozen time: the ambience reminded me of scenes from the film Nostalgia by Andrei Tarkovsky – damp silence, the echo of drops and distant footsteps resonating in the corridors, a kestrel's high pitch calls penetrate through the windows from the courtyard, where the silhouette of a night watcher with a german shepherd appears with the twilight. Together with other "Dreamers" we were invited to take part in the Hermit symposia and perform at the symposiums' openings or during the festivals. Since 1992, I have been traveling to Plasy almost every year, sometimes staying for a week or more.
For the first time after the collapse of the Iron Curtain, I had the opportunity to talk to artists from the "other side." Sometimes we didn't understand each other because of different languages, and I was wondering, what really brought them to Plasy? Anyway, we probably had something in common and some of them became my friends and collaborators since then, such as Pierre Berthet from Liège, or Michael Delia from New York.
In 1995, the Hermit festival and symposium had the title "Meridian Crossings.' After one of the concerts with The Horologe of Dreamers, we "crossed paths" with Michael Delia and Canadian musician Allan Paivio, whom we invited for a joint improvisation and recording session. We were playing in the chapels of St. Bernard, where the grand piano was, and St. Benedict. Among other instruments, we used a portable harmonium that Miloš brought back to Bohemia from Amsterdam that year. For recording, I used a DAT recorder with Neumann microphones. As a bonus and as the listener's digest from several hours of recordings of improvisations, we include on the Santini's Shoes album a short cello solo by Vojtěch Havel and a recording of Ad van Buuren's kinetic installation, which are part on the Meridian Crossings CD, released as a musical appendix to the printed catalog.
